What is SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor,is an estimate of how well a sunscreen can protect skin from UVB radiation which causes sunburn, damages skin, and contributes to skin cancer. If a person's skin would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, applying an SPF10 will mean the person's skin will only burn 100 minutes if they applied the sunscreen correctly. However, this is not an accurate measure and should not be used as a guideline. The method of application, thickness, environment and sun intensity all play a part.

So is higher SPF better for me?

Theoretically higher spfs are better but theory and reality are two different things. Many studies have found that people are misled by the claims on high-SPF sunscreen bottles. They are more likely to use high-SPF products improperly and as a result may expose themselves to more harmful ultraviolet radiation than people relying on products with lower SPF values.

How many times should I apply sun protection?

There is no definite guidelint to how many times you should apply, however, twice a day is the minimum amount you should apply. If you are under continuous sun exposure or are active, reapply whenever necessary. Be liberal with cream application and do not expect a thin layer to have adequate coverage over your entire body. 1 inch is just enough for your face.

What happens if I do not use enough sun protection?

You may experience darkening of pigmentation, skin and skin tone. Your skin will also appear drier and patches of redness may appear if your application is not even.

Must I apply sun protection at home?

Even at home, UV radiation is ever present. Aim to use SPF 15 if you know you will be indoors and increase to SPF40 if you are going out for a short lunch.

When should I apply sun protection before sun exposure?

Apply sun protection 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. Apply a generous amount to ensure even coverage to face, neck, ears and forehead. Allow some time for other creams to settle before applying sun protection on top.
